Taking some simple steps before storing your caravan for the winter will not only help with its maintenance but will also make starting the new holiday season a lot easier and hassle free.
To keep your upholstery in top condition it is best to remove it during winter, if you can store all bedding, cushions and pillows at your home. You can also remove seat cushions and stand them up on the floor of the caravan to allow air circulation.
Try to remove any batteries such as you leisure battery as ideal maintenance of these is to recharge every few months.
Turn off all gas appliance and bottles of gas to prevent any accidents or leaks. Also bear in mind that Butane can freeze at temperatures 5 degrees and below. An alternative would be propane.
Moisture can be generated when a caravan is closed for a long period of time, you can use dehumidifiers to combat this by placing them in the living area and bathroom. These will help absorb excess moisture.
Always drain your water system (both hot and cold) to prevent any leakages and any damage to pipes from freezing.
Remove your shower head and let the pipe hang loose so that no water is left in the pipe or the shower head.
Remove all waste water and replace the cap so that you do not get insects entering your caravan.
Leave all taps in open position, as this can help to prevent frost damage occurring in your pipes.
The “down” season is the best time to have you caravan serviced as you wont be using it and if the garage is less busy it might be slightly cheaper to service.
